Vandalur zoo, officially the Arignar Anna Zoological Park, is one of the largest zoos in India and an easy half day trip from Chennai. Spread across more than 600 hectares of scrub forest on the city’s southern edge, it’s home to hundreds of species and one of the few zoos in the country where you can go on a proper safari without leaving the city limits.
Animals and Enclosures at Vandalur Zoo
The zoo houses a huge range of animals across large, naturalistic enclosures rather than cramped cages, which makes a real difference to the visit. You’ll find Bengal tigers, Asiatic lions, leopards, sloth bears and elephants, alongside crocodiles, a well stocked reptile house and a large walk through aviary with storks, pelicans and hornbills. There’s also a dedicated nocturnal animal house and a children’s zoo section with smaller, gentler animals that little ones can get closer to. Because the park is so spread out, most enclosures give animals plenty of room to roam, so don’t expect to spot everything within the first hour.
The Vandalur Zoo Safari
The safari is the highlight for most visitors. A safari bus takes you through open enclosures for herbivores such as deer and antelope, and there’s a separate lion safari section where you view Asiatic lions from the safety of a caged vehicle. Safari tickets are bought separately from the general zoo entry and are limited in number through the day, so it’s worth heading straight to the safari counter as soon as you arrive rather than leaving it for later, particularly on weekends when queues build up quickly.
Vandalur Zoo Ticket Prices and Timings
General entry tickets are inexpensive, usually around Rs 30 to Rs 50 for adults and less for children, with an extra camera fee if you’re carrying a proper camera rather than a phone. The safari rides cost extra, typically in the Rs 50 to Rs 100 range per person depending on which safari section you choose. The zoo is open from 9 am to 5:15 pm, with the last entry usually around 4:15 pm, and it stays closed on Tuesdays, so plan your trip around that if you’re travelling specially to see it. Prices are revised occasionally, so it’s worth a quick check before you go, but Vandalur zoo remains one of the most affordable full day outings in Chennai.
How to Reach Vandalur Zoo from Chennai
Vandalur is about 32 km from central Chennai along GST Road, which usually takes 45 minutes to an hour and a half by car depending on traffic heading out of the city. If you’d rather use public transport, Vandalur has its own suburban railway station on the Chennai Beach to Chengalpattu line, and the zoo entrance is a short walk or short auto ride from the station. MTC buses running along GST Road also stop near the zoo. Given the distance, a car or cab is the more comfortable option, especially if you’re travelling with children who’ll want energy left for the safari and the walking involved.
Tips for Visiting Vandalur Zoo
- Arrive early, ideally by 9:30 am, both to beat the heat and to get on the safari before queues build up.
- Wear comfortable shoes, the park is genuinely huge and involves a fair bit of walking between enclosures.
- Carry water and a hat, shaded rest areas exist but are spread out.
- Battery operated vehicles and toy trains are available inside for a small fee if walking the whole park feels like too much.
- Avoid Tuesdays, the zoo is closed for maintenance that day.
Vandalur zoo is proof that you don’t need to travel far from Chennai for a proper wildlife day out. Between the size of the park, the safari and the sheer variety of animals on show, it’s an easy recommendation for families, school groups and anyone who just fancies a slower, greener day away from the city traffic.
