Marina Beach gets all the attention in Chennai, but ask a local where they actually go to unwind by the sea and there is a good chance they will point you towards Besant Nagar Beach instead. Known just as often as Elliot’s Beach, this stretch of coastline in south Chennai has a calmer, more neighbourhood feel that makes it one of the most pleasant places in the city to watch the sun go down.

How It Differs from Marina Beach

Besant Nagar Beach is considerably smaller than Marina, and that turns out to be its biggest strength. It is quieter, generally cleaner, and feels far less like a crowd management exercise than its more famous neighbour. Where Marina can get overwhelming on weekends with hawkers, crowds and heavy traffic along the promenade, Besant Nagar has a slower, more local rhythm. Families come here for a proper evening walk rather than just a photo, young couples find quieter stretches of sand, and there is a genuine sense of this being a neighbourhood beach rather than a tourist checkpoint. The water here tends to be a bit calmer too, though as with any Chennai beach, it is still not really suited to swimming given the currents.

Nearby Attractions

The area around the beach rewards a bit of exploring. At the southern end stands the Karl Schmidt Memorial, a striking white structure built in memory of a German engineer who drowned trying to save a swimmer here in the 1930s, and it has become something of an unofficial landmark and a popular spot for sunset photos. A short walk inland brings you to the Ashtalakshmi Temple, dedicated to the eight forms of the goddess Lakshmi, with an unusual multi tiered design that is worth a look even if you are not visiting for religious reasons. Also nearby are the leafy grounds of the Theosophical Society, one of the greenest and most peaceful pockets of the city, home to old banyan trees and quiet walking paths, a nice contrast to the beach crowds if you want a bit more shade and calm.

Food Along the Beach Road

Besant Nagar’s beach road, often just called Elliot’s Beach Road by locals, has developed into one of the city’s better known food stretches. Alongside the usual roadside stalls selling sundal, bhel puri, roasted corn and sugarcane juice, there is a genuine cluster of cafes and casual restaurants that draw people from across the city, not just beachgoers. It is a good place to end an evening walk with a coffee, an ice cream or a proper sit down meal, and the mix of options here is noticeably wider than at most other Chennai beaches.

Best Time to Visit

Evening is when Besant Nagar Beach really comes alive, roughly from late afternoon into early night, when the day’s heat has eased off and the sea breeze picks up. This is also when you get the best chance of a good sunset, with the sky turning orange over the water and plenty of people gathering to watch it. Mornings are quieter still and a good option if you prefer a walk without the evening crowds, but for the full experience, food stalls, atmosphere and all, evening is the time to come.

How to Get There

Besant Nagar sits in south Chennai, close to Adyar and Thiruvanmiyur, and is easily reached by auto rickshaw or cab from most parts of the city, particularly if you are staying along the IT corridor or in Adyar itself. City buses also run to the area, though an auto or cab tends to be the more comfortable option, especially in the evening when the roads nearby can get busy with everyone heading to the beach for the same reason you are.

Besant Nagar Beach will not overwhelm you the way Marina can, and that is precisely its appeal. It is the kind of place where you can have a proper conversation over the sound of the waves, grab a decent bite afterwards, and leave feeling like you have actually relaxed rather than just ticked off a sight.
