If you want proof that Chennai still has room for green, quiet corners, Semmozhi Poonga is a good place to start. It sits right on Cathedral Road, in one of the busiest parts of the city, yet once you are through the gate the traffic noise drops away and you are walking past flowerbeds, lawns and old trees instead.
It is not a huge park and you should not plan a full day around it. But for an hour or two of calm, a walk, some photographs or a break with the family, it does its job well, and it is one of the few proper botanical gardens inside central Chennai.
What is Semmozhi Poonga?
Semmozhi Poonga is a botanical garden maintained by the Tamil Nadu Horticulture Department, opened to the public around 2010 on land off Cathedral Road, close to Nungambakkam and Teynampet. The name points to its purpose. It was set up as a green space for the city, with a wide collection of plants grown and labelled for visitors to see, not just an ornamental park to walk through.
The garden covers roughly 20 acres, which sounds generous until you compare it with an actual national park or forest reserve. Think of it instead as a well organised, well planted city garden: landscaped lawns, paved walkways, shaded seating and several distinct planted sections, all within a compact and walkable area close to the US Consulate and the wider Cathedral Road business district.
What to see inside
The appeal of Semmozhi Poonga is in its variety. In a relatively small area, the garden groups plants by type, so you can walk from one collection to the next in a short stretch.
- A wide range of exotic and rare trees, many labelled with their names, brought together from different regions
- A dedicated medicinal plants section, useful if you are curious about traditional Siddha or Ayurvedic plant use
- Ornamental and flowering plants arranged in beds along the main walkways
- A bonsai collection, always a favourite with visitors and a good stop for photographs
- A cactus and succulent garden, a change of pace from the tropical greenery elsewhere in the park
- Open lawns where families sit, children run around and school groups gather
- A musical fountain, one of the more popular features, especially with children and in the evening when it is lit up
None of this is on a grand scale. This is a garden meant for a slow walk and a bit of reading, not a sprawling estate. Give yourself an hour to ninety minutes to see most of it without rushing, longer if you want to sit on the lawns for a while.
Timings and entry
Semmozhi Poonga charges a nominal entry ticket, the kind of small amount that makes it accessible to almost anyone, and historically there has been a separate small charge if you carry a camera in. The garden keeps set opening hours through the day and is usually closed on one day of the week, commonly Monday, for maintenance.
We are deliberately not printing exact rupee figures or exact opening times here, because these details change from time to time, and old numbers floating around online cause more confusion than help. Before you go, it is worth a quick check with a recent source, or simply asking at the gate, to confirm the current ticket price, camera charges if any, and the weekly closed day.
How to get there
The garden sits on Cathedral Road, close to its junction with the surrounding Nungambakkam and Teynampet neighbourhoods, and near well known landmarks such as the US Consulate. This is a central, well connected part of Chennai, so getting there is straightforward from most directions.
If you are using the metro, the nearest stations on the Chennai Metro network are a short auto ride away rather than a direct walk, so plan on combining metro and auto for the last stretch. City buses running along Cathedral Road and the nearby arterial roads also stop within walking distance. Autos and app based cabs are the easiest option if you are coming from further away, since Cathedral Road is easy to name to any driver. If you are driving yourself, there is parking nearby, though space can be tight during weekends and evenings when the garden is busiest.
Best time to visit
Chennai heat makes timing genuinely important here, more than at most indoor attractions. Early morning, soon after opening, is the best time if you want the garden at its calmest, with walkers and joggers rather than crowds, and soft light for photographs. Evening is the other good window, cooler, often busier with families, and the time to catch the musical fountain if it is running.
Midday, especially between around noon and 3pm, gets uncomfortably hot for a walk through an open garden with limited shade in places, so it is best avoided if you can help it. Across the year, the cooler months from around November to February are the most pleasant for a visit, while the peak of summer from April to June is hard going even early in the day.
Things to do nearby
Because Semmozhi Poonga sits in such a central part of Chennai, it works well as one stop on a longer day out rather than a destination in itself. Cathedral Road and the surrounding Nungambakkam and Teynampet area have their own share of cafes, churches and shopping streets worth a wander once you are done with the garden.

Tips for your visit
- Carry cash in small denominations for the entry ticket and any camera charge
- Wear comfortable shoes, the walkways are paved but you will be on your feet
- Go early morning or evening rather than in the middle of the day
- Carry water, there is limited shade in some sections
- Keep to marked paths, this is a maintained garden with active planting, not open parkland
- Check the weekly closed day and current timings before you set out, since these are subject to change
- Combine the visit with a walk along Cathedral Road rather than travelling especially for the garden alone
Semmozhi Poonga will not take up your whole day, and it is not trying to. What it offers is a genuine patch of maintained green space in the middle of a crowded city, with enough variety in its plant collections to hold your interest for an hour or two. For a quiet morning walk, a family outing or a break between other Chennai sightseeing, it earns its place on the list.
