As much as Chennai has to offer, one of its best features is how easy it is to escape. Within a couple of hours you can reach ancient temples, French colonial streets, cool green hills and quiet beaches. Here are the best weekend getaways from the city.
Mahabalipuram
The closest and one of the finest, the shore temple town of Mahabalipuram is barely an hour and a half away down the coast. Ancient rock carvings, a wide beach and fresh seafood make it a perfect day or overnight trip.
Pondicherry
About three hours south, Pondicherry is a world of its own, with mustard-yellow French colonial buildings, seaside promenades, charming cafes and the serene community of Auroville nearby. It is the ideal spot for a slow, romantic weekend.
Kanchipuram
The city of a thousand temples is also the home of the famous Kanchipuram silk saree. A short drive from Chennai, it is a wonderful day out for anyone interested in history, craft and spectacular temple architecture.
Hills, waterfalls and lakes
When you want cooler air, the hill station of Yelagiri offers gentle treks and quiet views. Closer to the city, the Pulicat Lake bird sanctuary and the Tada Falls make for refreshing day trips, especially after the monsoon when everything is green.
The coast to the south
Beyond Mahabalipuram, the coast rewards a longer drive, with quiet beaches and the old Danish town of Tranquebar for those who like their getaways off the beaten track. Pack a bag, fill the tank, and let the East Coast Road do the rest. Our guide to the best beaches in Chennai has more coastal ideas closer to home.
Whatever your mood, there is an escape within easy reach of Chennai. Sometimes the best part of a city is knowing when to leave it for the weekend.
