If you’re hunting for hotels in Chennai, the first thing to work out is not the star rating but the area, because this city is spread wide and traffic can eat into your day. Whether you land at the airport for a quick business trip or you’re settling in for a family holiday by the sea, there’s a proper base for every kind of stay here, and I’ve stayed in enough of them over the years to point you the right way.
Where to Base Yourself: The Best Areas for Hotels in Chennai
Nungambakkam and Alwarpet sit right in the middle of things, close to Khader Nawaz Khan Road’s restaurants and a short hop from the airport and the beach both. T Nagar is the place if you want to shop till you drop on Pondy Bazaar, though it gets loud and crowded. Anna Salai and Egmore work well if you’re arriving by train and need something central for business. Adyar and MRC Nagar give you a calmer, greener stretch near the Adyar river mouth, while the OMR and Taramani IT corridor suits anyone visiting the tech offices out that way. And if the beach is the whole point of your trip, you’ll want to look further south along the East Coast Road.
Luxury Hotels in Chennai Worth the Splurge
The ITC Grand Chola in Guindy is the one everyone talks about, and rightly so. It’s one of the largest hotels in Asia, built to resemble a Chola-era palace, with the excellent Peshawri and Pan Asian restaurants inside. The Taj Coromandel in Nungambakkam is older and more understated, a proper old Chennai institution with the much-loved Southern Spice restaurant for authentic Chettinad food. The Leela Palace sits right on the seafront at MRC Nagar, so ask for a sea-facing room and you’ll wake up to the Bay of Bengal. Park Hyatt Chennai, out near Taramani, feels more like a resort than a city hotel, low-rise and quiet with proper garden space, which is rare in this part of town.
Mid-Range Hotels That Don’t Skimp on Comfort
You don’t need to spend a fortune to sleep well here. The GRT Grand in T Nagar is a solid, reliable choice close to the shopping. Hyatt Regency Chennai on Anna Salai is handy for business travellers and has one of the city’s best rooftop bars thrown in. Radisson Blu Chennai City Centre near Egmore is a five-minute walk from Chennai Central if you’re arriving by train, and Vivanta on the IT Expressway suits anyone with meetings out towards OMR. For a simpler, no-fuss option, Ginger hotels turn up in several parts of the city and are dependable if you just need a clean bed and fast wifi.
Hotels in Chennai Near the Airport
If you’ve got an early flight or a late arrival, staying near Chennai International Airport on GST Road saves a lot of stress. Trident Chennai is the standout here, with proper landscaped grounds that make you forget you’re metres from a runway. Hilton Chennai, also on GST Road, is another dependable pick with easy shuttle access. Both are far enough from the terminal to feel restful but close enough that a 3am departure doesn’t mean a two-hour drive across the city.
Beach Resorts Along the ECR
For a proper coastal break, head down the East Coast Road towards Kovalam and Mahabalipuram. Taj Fisherman’s Cove Resort and Spa in Kovalam is the pick of the bunch, an old colonial-era property turned into a full beach resort with its own private stretch of sand. Radisson Blu Resort Temple Bay in Mamallapuram sits close to the famous shore temple and rock carvings, so you can mix sightseeing with sunbathing. These resorts are an hour or so from the airport, which makes them better suited to a two or three night stay than a quick overnight stop.
Wherever you end up, book a room with good reviews on air conditioning and hot water, because Chennai’s heat and humidity are no joke for most of the year. Pick your area based on what you’re actually here to do, and the rest of the trip tends to fall into place.
