If Chennai keeps a calendar, it is written in festivals. The city marks the year with music, lights, temple processions and family feasts, and there is almost always something to celebrate. Here is what to look out for through the year.

Pongal, the harvest festival

Held in mid-January, Pongal is the big one. Over four days the city gives thanks for the harvest, homes are decorated with fresh kolam patterns at the doorstep, and the sweet rice dish that gives the festival its name is cooked until the pot boils joyfully over. It is warm, generous and unmistakably Tamil.

The Margazhi music season

Through December and January, Chennai becomes the capital of Carnatic music and Bharatanatyam dance. The city’s sabhas host hundreds of concerts during the Margazhi season, and the canteen food served alongside them is a tradition in its own right. Even if you are new to the music, the atmosphere is something special. Pair a concert with a wander through the city’s temples and beaches for a perfect December day.

Tamil New Year and temple festivals

Tamil New Year in April brings fresh starts and family gatherings, while individual temples hold their own vibrant festivals throughout the year, often with towering decorated chariots pulled through the streets. Mylapore’s temple festival is among the most colourful.

Navaratri, Deepavali and Madras Day

In autumn, Navaratri sees homes display beautifully arranged golu dolls, and Deepavali lights up the whole city. And every August, Madras Day celebrates the founding of the city itself, with heritage walks, talks and food events that are a lovely way to get under Chennai’s skin.

Whenever you visit, there is a good chance a celebration is close by. Follow the sound of the music and the smell of the sweets, and you will not go far wrong.
