Guindy National Park is a rare thing: a genuine national park sitting right inside a major city. Tucked into the Guindy area of Chennai, it is one of the smallest national parks in India, yet it protects a pocket of scrub forest and grassland that is home to blackbuck, spotted deer and a surprising amount of birdlife, all within a short drive of the city centre.
Wildlife and what to see
The park is best known for its blackbuck, the elegant antelope that has become something of a symbol of the place, alongside herds of spotted deer that you will usually spot grazing in the open grassland. Jackals, small mammals, tortoises and a wide range of resident and migratory birds also live here, making it a favourite with birdwatchers. Adjoining the park is the Guindy Snake Park, a well known reptile centre with cobras, pythons, vipers and crocodiles, plus a children’s park, which makes the whole area an easy outing for families.
Timings and tickets
The park and snake park are generally open through the day, with the snake park usually closed on one day of the week, so it is worth checking before you travel. Entry fees are modest, typically under Rs 50 for the park, with a separate small charge for the snake park. Early morning is the best time to visit, both to beat the heat and to catch the animals when they are most active.
How to reach it
Guindy National Park sits off Sardar Patel Road in Guindy, one of the most accessible parts of the city. Guindy railway station and the Guindy metro station are both close by, making it one of the easiest green spaces in Chennai to reach without a car, and it is only a short drive from the airport and the southern business districts.
Tips for visiting
- Go early in the morning for cooler weather and better wildlife sightings.
- Carry water and wear comfortable walking shoes, as there is a fair bit of walking.
- Combine the park with the adjoining snake park and children’s park for a full family outing.
- Keep noise down and do not feed the animals.
