Chennai to Vellore: Trains, Buses and a Day Trip Guide

Vellore is one of those places that actually deserves the label day trip. It sits roughly 130 to 145 km west of Chennai on the way to Bengaluru, and between the trains, the highway and the buses, you have three genuinely good ways to get there and back in a single day if you want to. Most people do not rush it though, because between the Golden Temple, the old fort and the hospital crowds, there is enough here to fill a proper overnight stay.

This guide goes through every travel option honestly, then covers what to actually do once you arrive, whether you are visiting for sightseeing, for a temple trip, or because someone you know is being treated at CMC.

Chennai to Vellore distance and travel time

• By train to Katpadi Junction: about 2 to 3 hours, frequent services through the day, very cheap
• By road via NH 48: about 130 to 145 km, roughly 2.5 to 3 hours by car or taxi
• By bus (TNSTC, SETC and private): about 3 to 3.5 hours, very frequent, cheap
• By air: not practical, Vellore has no airport and Chennai airport is the nearest one, so flying makes no sense for a 140 km trip

By train

The train is the classic way to reach Vellore, and for good reason. Plenty of trains run from MGR Chennai Central and Chennai Central towards Katpadi Junction (station code KPD), which is the main railhead for the city, and a smaller number call at Vellore Cantonment as well. Journey time is usually around 2 to 3 hours depending on whether you catch an express or a slower passenger service, and fares are low across all classes.

Katpadi Junction itself is about 8 km from central Vellore, so once you arrive you will need an auto, a cab, or a local bus to get into town, to the fort area, or onward towards Sripuram. Autos are readily available right outside the station and it is a short, cheap hop into the city. If your final destination is CMC hospital, autos from Katpadi know the route well since it is one of the most common requests at the station.

By road

If you are driving or taking a cab, Vellore is an easy run. The route follows NH 48, the Chennai to Bengaluru highway, which is genuinely one of the best maintained highways in this part of the country. Expect the drive to take about 2.5 to 3 hours depending on traffic getting out of Chennai and how many stops you make along the way. There are decent roadside restaurants for a coffee or breakfast break, which makes the drive comfortable even for families or older travellers.

This is the option we would recommend if you are travelling in a group, carrying luggage for a hospital stay, or simply want door to door convenience without worrying about station transfers.

By bus

Buses are the most frequent option of all. TNSTC and SETC run government buses on this route through the day, and there is no shortage of private operators either, particularly since Vellore sits directly on the main highway corridor towards Bengaluru and beyond. Journey time is around 3 to 3.5 hours, a little longer than the train or a car because of the number of stops, but fares are very low and buses run at all hours, so you rarely have to wait long.

Buses are a solid choice if you are travelling alone on a budget, or if your timing does not line up with a convenient train.

Which option should you choose?

For most travellers, the train to Katpadi is the sweet spot of speed and cost, especially if you do not mind the short auto ride into town at the other end. If you are travelling as a family, with luggage, or need to reach CMC hospital directly with minimal fuss, a car via NH 48 is worth the extra cost. And if you are watching your budget or simply could not get a train seat, the bus network has you covered with departures running practically all day.

Sripuram Golden Temple

Sripuram, formally the Sri Lakshmi Narayani Temple, is the reason a huge number of visitors come to Vellore in the first place. The temple’s main structure is covered in real gold foil, and it sits inside a large, carefully landscaped complex where the walking path to the sanctum is laid out in a distinctive star shape.

There is a strict dress code here, so dress modestly and be prepared to walk a fair distance in the heat, since the path winds through the grounds before reaching the temple itself. Phones and cameras are not allowed inside, so you will need to leave them at the counters provided, and entry is free, with paid special darshan options available if you want a quicker or more guided visit. Go early morning or in the evening if you can, both for the light and to avoid the worst of the sun.

Vellore Fort and its temples

Vellore Fort is a genuinely impressive 16th century granite fort and one of the best preserved in Tamil Nadu. Inside the fort walls you will find the Jalakanteswarar Temple, along with a church and a mosque, an unusual and interesting mix that reflects the fort’s long and varied history. Visiting for CMC hospital

A large number of visitors to Vellore are not sightseeing at all, they are here for treatment at Christian Medical College, one of the country’s most respected hospitals. If that is why you are travelling, it is worth knowing the city is well set up for it. Because CMC draws patients and families from across India for extended stays, there is a wide range of accommodation close to the hospital, from simple lodges to more comfortable hotels, along with plenty of affordable food options nearby, including places used to catering to families on tight schedules and tighter budgets.

If you are arriving by train, autos from Katpadi Junction know the hospital route well, and if you are driving in, the hospital area is easy enough to reach off the main roads into the city. Give yourself some buffer time on arrival day, since appointment queues and paperwork can take longer than expected.

More to see and where to eat

If you have extra time, Amirthi Zoological Park, a small forest and zoological park a short drive from the city, makes for a pleasant, quieter outing away from the temple and fort crowds, with some walking trails and a modest collection of animals.

On the food side, Vellore is known locally for its biryani, and it is well worth seeking out a plate while you are there. Beyond that, cheap and reliable South Indian meals are everywhere in the city, so you are never far from a filling, affordable lunch whether you are sightseeing or waiting around near the hospital.

Where to stay and best time to visit

Accommodation in Vellore covers a wide range, from basic lodges at around Rs 800 to Rs 1500 a night to more comfortable mid range hotels between Rs 2000 and Rs 4000. Meals are generally cheap, with a simple South Indian meal costing somewhere between Rs 100 and Rs 300, and biryani or a fuller restaurant meal a bit more.

Vellore has a hot, dry climate for much of the year, and the fort and Sripuram grounds involve a fair amount of walking in the open, so October to March is by far the most comfortable window to visit. If you do go in the hotter months, an early start is worth planning around.

• Carry water and wear comfortable shoes, both the fort and Sripuram involve a good amount of walking
• Follow the dress code at Sripuram and leave phones and cameras at the counters provided
• If travelling for CMC, book accommodation near the hospital ahead of time given the steady flow of visitors
• Start early if doing this as a single day trip from Chennai, to leave enough daylight for both the fort and the temple
• Keep some cash on hand, as smaller eateries and autos may not accept cards

However you choose to get there, Vellore rewards the trip. It is close enough to Chennai for an easy day out, yet has enough packed into it, from a fort with real history to a temple unlike anywhere else in the state, to justify staying longer if your schedule allows it.
